How to Fix Error: live media not found

Topic: Linux Ubuntu Boot Errors | Status: Updated

What is this error?

The "Error: live media not found" message occurs when your Ubuntu system cannot find the live media (USB or CD/DVD) used to boot the system. This error may prevent the user from accessing the live environment for installation or recovery.

How to Fix It

  1. Check Boot Order: Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings. Ensure that the boot order prioritizes your USB drive or CD/DVD over other devices.
  2. Verify Media Integrity: If using a USB drive, confirm that the live media is properly created. You can use tools like 'Rufus' or 'Etcher', and check the integrity of the downloaded ISO file against its checksum.
  3. Use a Different USB Port: If you are using a USB drive, try connecting it to a different USB port, preferably a port directly connected to the motherboard (usually USB 2.0 ports), as some booting issues may arise from compatibility problems with USB 3.0 ports.
  4. Recreate Live Media: If the issue persists, recreate the live USB or burn the ISO to the DVD again. Ensure a proper ejection of the device after the writing process to avoid corruption.
  5. Check for BIOS/UEFI Settings: Look for options related to "Secure Boot" and "Fast Boot" in your BIOS/UEFI settings. Disable "Secure Boot" as it may block the boot process from certain media.
  6. Test on Another Computer: If possible, try booting the live media on a different computer to determine if the issue is with the media itself or the original hardware.
