What is this error?

VAL 9 is an error code associated with the Vanguard anti-cheat system used in Valorant. This error typically indicates that the Vanguard service is not functioning properly, preventing players from launching the game.

How to Fix It

  1. Restart Your Computer: Begin by rebooting your PC to ensure that all system processes, including Vanguard, are reset.
  2. Verify Vanguard Installation: Check if Vanguard is installed correctly. Navigate to the game installation folder, locate the Vanguard folder, and ensure all files are intact.
  3. Reinstall Vanguard: If files are missing or corrupted, uninstall Vanguard from your computer. To do this, go to 'Control Panel' > 'Programs' > 'Uninstall a program', find "Riot Vanguard," and uninstall it. Afterward, launch Valorant, and it will prompt you to reinstall Vanguard.
  4. Run Valorant as Administrator: Right-click the Valorant shortcut and select 'Run as administrator'. This can sometimes bypass permission issues that interfere with Vanguard.
  5. Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure your graphics drivers are up to date. Visit the manufacturer's website (NVIDIA, AMD, etc.) to download and install the latest drivers.
  6. Check for System Updates: Go to 'Settings' > 'Update & Security' and ensure that your operating system is up to date. Install any pending updates as they may include fixes for compatibility issues.
  7. Disable Conflicting Software: Certain background applications can conflict with Vanguard. Temporarily disable or uninstall applications such as overlays, screen recorders, or system optimizers and then try launching the game again.
  8. Contact Support: If the error persists after following the above steps, reach out to Riot Games Support for further assistance. Provide them with details about the steps you’ve already taken to expedite the troubleshooting process.
